Furazolidone is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal tract. It is effective against certain gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as some protozoa.
It is indicated for the treatment of infectious diarrhea, bacterial dysentery, giardiasis, typhoid fever, and other gastrointestinal infections. Furazolidone works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes, leading to the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms.
The medication is available in tablet or oral suspension form and should be taken as directed by a doctor.
Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, allergic reactions (rash, itching), or, rarely, hematological effects (hemolytic anemia). Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment and for up to 4 days after completing it, as it may cause severe adverse reactions (disulfiram-like reaction).
Furazolidone is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug, severe renal impairment, or hematological disorders. It should also be used with caution in children and pregnant women.
