Macrogol + electrolytes is a combination used to treat constipation and, in some forms or doses, faecal impaction or bowel preparation before investigations. Macrogol is an osmotic laxative: it holds water in the bowel, softens stools and makes them easier to pass. Electrolytes help maintain the body’s normal salt balance during treatment.
It is taken by mouth, usually as powder dissolved in water, according to the leaflet. The solution must be prepared with the correct amount of water and drunk according to the recommended schedule. For constipation, the effect usually appears within 1–2 days, but it can vary. Do not increase the dose without advice or use continuously without looking for the cause.
Side effects may include bloating, gas, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, bowel noises, anal discomfort or vomiting. Excessive diarrhoea can cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially in older, frail patients or people with kidney disease, heart disease or diuretic treatment. Other medicines may be absorbed less well if taken at the same time.
Consult a doctor if severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, fever, weight loss, new unexplained constipation or lack of effect occurs. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and chronic illness, seek medical advice. Hydration, fibre, physical activity and a regular toilet routine remain important for prevention.
