Indicated for: vitamin deficiency; vitamin B12 deficiency
Route of administration: oral
Substance: vitamins + cyanocobalamin (vitamins and vitamin B12)
ATC: A05BAN2 (Alimentary tract and metabolism | Liver therapy, lipotropics)
Vitamins + cyanocobalamin is a vitamin combination in which vitamin B12 is a key component. Cyanocobalamin helps form red blood cells, supports the nervous system and participates in DNA synthesis. The supplement may be useful when dietary intake is low, in vegetarians or vegans, in older adults or in situations of malabsorption.
It is taken by mouth according to the leaflet or medical advice. If vitamin B12 deficiency is confirmed, the doctor may choose higher doses or injectable forms depending on the cause. Anaemia, numbness, tingling, memory problems or balance difficulties should be medically assessed, because they may indicate significant deficiency or another condition.
Side effects are usually rare and mild, such as nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, rash or itching. Some people may develop acne-like changes or hypersensitivity reactions. Cyanocobalamin may be less well absorbed in people using proton-pump inhibitors or metformin long term, and in those with gastric surgery, atrophic gastritis or intestinal disease.
Ask a doctor if severe tiredness, paleness, dizziness, palpitations, numbness, unsteady walking, confusion or weakness occurs. Do not treat anaemia on your own without blood tests, because folic acid or other vitamins may partly mask vitamin B12 deficiency. Supplementation works best when adapted to the cause and monitored when needed.
