Eslicarbazepine is a medication used for the treatment of focal epileptic seizures, with or without secondary generalization, in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It is an antiepileptic drug that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, reducing neuronal excitability.
The medication is taken orally, usually once daily, as directed by a doctor. The dosage is adjusted based on the patient's response and tolerance to treatment.
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, headache, and fatigue. In rare cases, more severe adverse effects such as severe skin rashes or liver function impairment may occur.
Eslicarbazepine is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications they are taking to avoid drug interactions.
