Indicated for: liver disorders; hepatic steatosis
Route of administration: oral
Substance: essential phospholipids (hepatoprotective phospholipids)
ATC: A05BA10 (Alimentary tract and metabolism | Liver therapy, lipotropics)
Essential phospholipids are substances similar to those found in cell membranes, especially phosphatidylcholine. They are used in some products to support liver function in contexts such as fatty liver, unbalanced diet or exposure to factors that stress the liver. They are not emergency treatment and do not cure all liver diseases.
They are taken by mouth, usually as capsules with meals, according to the leaflet. Any benefit develops gradually and should be combined with essential measures: reducing alcohol, weight control, balanced nutrition, physical activity and treatment of diabetes or lipid disorders. They should not be used as a reason to continue habits that damage the liver.
Side effects are usually digestive: abdominal discomfort, nausea, soft stools, diarrhoea or bloating. Rash, hives or allergic reactions may occur rarely, especially if the product contains ingredients derived from soy. Interactions are uncommon, but patients taking anticoagulants should ask a doctor before use.
Consult a doctor if jaundice, dark urine, pain under the right ribs, weight loss, severe tiredness, persistent vomiting or abnormal liver tests occur. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, use should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Essential phospholipids may have an adjunctive role, but they do not replace diagnosis and treatment of liver disease.
