Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production. It is commonly prescribed for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric ulcers, and erosive esophagitis.
This medication effectively relieves symptoms of heartburn and acid regurgitation, making it a first-line treatment for GERD. It is also used to prevent and treat ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Esomeprazole is often combined with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection, a common cause of gastric ulcers. In this context, the combined treatment helps reduce the risk of recurrence.
At standard doses, esomeprazole is well-tolerated, with rare side effects such as headaches, nausea, or diarrhea. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and gastrointestinal infections.
