ATC: R02AA20 (Respiratory system | Throat preparations | Antiseptics)
Risk of severe allergic reaction. Seek urgent medical help if serious symptoms occur.
Tyrothricin + benzalkonium chloride + benzocaine is a local combination used in some throat lozenges for sore throat, swallowing discomfort and mild inflammation of the mouth or pharynx. Tyrothricin has local antibacterial activity, benzalkonium chloride acts as an antiseptic, and benzocaine is a local anaesthetic that helps relieve pain.
The lozenges should be allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth, without chewing or swallowing whole, according to the leaflet. The maximum daily number should not be exceeded. Treatment is intended for mild, short-term symptoms. If sore throat is severe, high fever occurs, pus is visible on the tonsils or swallowing is very difficult, medical assessment is needed.
Side effects may include local numbness, altered taste, irritation, nausea, allergic reactions or rash. Benzocaine can rarely cause methaemoglobinaemia, a serious condition in which the blood carries oxygen less effectively. The risk is higher in young children, overdose or people with certain disorders. The product should therefore be used only from the permitted age.
Seek urgent medical help if bluish lips or skin, breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, unusual tiredness, facial swelling, hives or rapid worsening occurs. Do not use the product long term without medical advice. Sore throat may be viral, bacterial, irritative or allergic, and some cases require different treatment, including medical evaluation or antibiotics.
