Tretinoin, also known as retinoic acid, is a derivative of vitamin A primarily used in the treatment of acne vulgaris and photoaging of the skin. It works by regulating the keratinization process and stimulating cell turnover, thereby reducing the formation of comedones and improving skin texture.
Tretinoin is available as topical creams or gels and is applied directly to the affected skin, usually once daily in the evening. It is effective in reducing inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, as well as diminishing fine wrinkles and pigmentation spots caused by sun exposure.
Common side effects include skin irritation, redness, peeling, and increased sensitivity to UV radiation. Patients are advised to use sunscreen during treatment to prevent sunburn.
