Desogestrel is a hormonal contraceptive from the progestin class, used to prevent pregnancy. It is a third-generation progestin that works by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus (thereby preventing sperm from reaching the egg), and altering the uterine lining, reducing the chances of implantation of a fertilized egg.
Desogestrel is commonly used in oral contraceptives, either as part of combined pills (with an estrogen) or as a progestin-only pill (mini-pill), making it a suitable option for women who cannot use estrogens. It is taken daily, at the same time, to ensure maximum effectiveness.
