Indicated for: local antisepsis; superficial skin and mucosal infections
Route of administration: cutaneous
Substance: benzalkonium chloride + chlorhexidine (quaternary antiseptic and biguanide antiseptic)
ATC: D08AC52 (Dermatologicals | Antiseptics and disinfectants | Biguanides and amidines)
Benzalkonium chloride + chlorhexidine is an antiseptic combination used, depending on the product form, for skin hygiene, disinfection of small areas or local care of some mucous membranes. Both substances act against certain bacteria and fungi, reducing the surface microbial load. It is not a systemic antibiotic and does not treat deep infections.
The product is applied locally exactly as stated in the leaflet, without exceeding the recommended frequency. It should not be used on deep wounds, large burns, sensitive mucosa or in the eyes unless the pharmaceutical form is specifically intended for that site. Let the area dry, and apply a dressing only if advised. Do not mix it with soaps or other disinfectants unless recommended.
Possible side effects include stinging, dryness, irritation, redness, itching, contact dermatitis or, rarely, important allergic reactions. Chlorhexidine can rarely cause severe hypersensitivity reactions. Repeated use on large areas may irritate the skin and alter local flora. If blisters, intense pain or worsening of the treated area occur, treatment should be reassessed.
Seek medical help if facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, dizziness, pus, fever, spreading redness or a wound that does not heal occurs. Deep cuts, bites, large burns or infections with local heat and pain need medical review. An antiseptic can support local hygiene, but it does not replace appropriate treatment for a serious infection.
