Indicated for: gout; hyperuricemia
Route of administration: oral
Substance: colchicine (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
ATC: M04AC01 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antigout preparations | Preparations with no effect on uric acid metabolism)
Colchicine is a medication primarily used for the treatment and prevention of acute gout attacks and for managing familial Mediterranean fever. It works by reducing inflammation caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, without affecting uric acid levels in the blood.
Colchicine is taken orally, and the dosage must be carefully adjusted to avoid toxicity. It is also used in other inflammatory conditions, such as recurrent pericarditis.
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or, in rare cases, severe toxicity manifested as bone marrow suppression, kidney failure, or muscle damage. It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment and should be used cautiously in those taking other medications that interact with colchicine.
