Clonidine is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), but it also has other therapeutic indications, such as managing withdrawal symptoms (alcohol, opioids, nicotine), treating migraines, menopausal hot flashes, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, meaning it acts on the central nervous system to reduce sympathetic activity, thereby lowering blood pressure.

Clonidine lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and reducing heart rate. It is available in oral tablets, transdermal patches, or injectable solutions, depending on the indication. In hypertension treatment, it is typically used as a second- or third-line therapy, especially in cases where other medications are not effective.

While effective, clonidine can cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, or fatigue. In rare cases, severe hypotension or bradycardia may occur. It is important not to abruptly discontinue clonidine, as this can lead to a rapid and dangerous increase in blood pressure (rebound effect).
