Loratadine + pseudoephedrine is used for symptoms of allergic rhinitis or colds with blocked nose, sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose or eyes and watery eyes. Loratadine is an antihistamine that reduces the allergic response, while pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that reduces swelling of the nasal lining and helps restore easier breathing through the nose.
It is taken by mouth, often as prolonged-release tablets, according to the leaflet. Do not exceed the recommended dose and do not combine it with other cold medicines containing decongestants. Pseudoephedrine may cause insomnia, so some products are best taken earlier in the day. This combination is not suitable for every patient.
Side effects may include dry mouth, headache, insomnia, nervousness, palpitations, increased blood pressure, dizziness, nausea or difficulty urinating. Caution is needed in patients with high blood pressure, heart disease, rhythm disorders, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, diabetes, enlarged prostate, liver or kidney disease. MAO inhibitors are an important contraindication.
Seek medical help if chest pain, irregular heartbeat, very high blood pressure, confusion, severe agitation, urinary retention, rash or facial swelling occurs. If symptoms persist, worsen or are associated with high fever and facial pain, consult a doctor. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, use should be decided by a doctor or pharmacist.
