Cimicifuga rhizome extract, also known as black cohosh extract, is a herbal preparation used to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating, irritability or mild sleep disturbance. It is intended for functional symptoms and does not replace medical assessment if vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or other unusual signs occur.
It is taken by mouth according to the product leaflet. The effect is not immediate and may take several weeks. Do not combine several menopause products without medical advice, especially if you use hormone treatment, medicines for breast cancer or have chronic illnesses. If symptoms worsen during use, a doctor should be consulted.
Possible side effects include digestive upset, headache, dizziness, skin reactions, fluid retention or abdominal discomfort. An important warning is the rare possibility of liver injury. People with liver disease should use such preparations cautiously or avoid them, depending on medical advice.
Stop taking it and seek medical help if marked tiredness, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea or upper abdominal pain occurs. Consult a doctor if vaginal bleeding or new symptoms appear. The preparation is not intended for pregnancy, breastfeeding or children and should be chosen from controlled, reliable sources.
