Chaste tree fruit extract, also known as Vitex agnus-castus fruit extract, is a herbal product traditionally used for premenstrual symptoms such as breast tenderness, irritability, mood changes, bloating or discomfort before menstruation. It is thought to act on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and may influence prolactin levels. It is not an immediate symptom reliever.
It is taken by mouth, usually daily, according to the product leaflet. The effect develops gradually and may require several menstrual cycles. It is not suitable for treating abnormal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, infertility or hormonal disorders without diagnosis.
