Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and antiserotonergic agent used to treat allergies such as allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and other allergic reactions. It is also used to stimulate appetite in cases of weight loss or malnutrition and occasionally for the treatment of migraines.
Cyproheptadine works by blocking H1 histamine receptors and serotonin receptors, thereby reducing allergic symptoms and influencing appetite. It is available in tablet or syrup form.
Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, or weight gain. It is contraindicated in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, prostate hypertrophy, or hypersensitivity to the substance. It should also be used cautiously in children and the elderly.
