Electrolyte disturbances
This medicine may change blood electrolyte levels.
Sodium chloride + potassium chloride + calcium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium acetate + glucose is an infusion solution that provides water, electrolytes and energy as glucose. It may be used in hospital when a patient cannot drink or eat enough or needs correction of fluid and electrolyte balance.
It is given intravenously only by healthcare professionals. The amount and infusion rate are chosen according to age, weight, blood tests, fluid losses, blood glucose, kidney function and heart function. Because the solution contains glucose and several electrolytes, monitoring of glucose, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and acid-base balance may be needed.
Side effects may include infusion-site pain, vein inflammation, fever, local infection, high blood glucose, fluid overload, swelling or electrolyte imbalance. In patients with diabetes, kidney failure, heart failure or severe illness, risks are higher and careful adjustment is needed.
Tell healthcare staff immediately if shortness of breath, rapid limb swelling, intense thirst, confusion, palpitations, chest pain, severe weakness, pain or swelling at the infusion site occurs. Inform the doctor about diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, insulin treatment, diuretics, digoxin or known electrolyte disorders.
