Lorazepam is a medication from the benzodiazepine class, used to treat anxiety, insomnia, panic disorders, and to reduce agitation or nervous tension. It is also used in certain cases to treat acute seizures (status epilepticus) or to calm patients before surgeries or medical procedures.
Lorazepam works by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces excessive brain activity, producing sedative, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects.
Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, confusion, muscle weakness, or, in rare cases, paradoxical reactions (such as agitation or irritability). Long-term use can lead to physical and psychological dependence, so treatment should be short-term and under medical supervision.
