Cyproterone is a medication primarily used to treat conditions caused by an excess of androgens (male hormones) and in hormonal therapy for certain types of cancer. It is a potent antiandrogen that blocks the effects of androgens by inhibiting their binding to specific receptors and reducing testosterone production.
Cyproterone is used to treat hirsutism (excessive hair growth in typically male areas), severe acne, seborrhea, and androgenic alopecia in women. It is also used in hormonal therapy for advanced prostate cancer, where it helps reduce tumor growth by blocking the effects of testosterone. Additionally, cyproterone is included in some combined oral contraceptives to treat hormonal disorders and prevent pregnancy.
While effective, cyproterone may cause side effects. The most common include fatigue, decreased libido, weight gain, mood changes, and breast tenderness. In rare cases, more serious reactions such as liver dysfunction, venous thromboembolism, or severe depression may occur. Regular monitoring is essential, especially for long-term use.
Cyproterone is contraindicated in patients with severe liver disease, a history of thromboembolism, severe depression, or hypersensitivity to the active substance. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication. Treatment should be administered as directed by a doctor, and patients must strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage.
