Indicated for: gastric hyperacidity; gastroesophageal reflux
Route of administration: oral
Substance: aluminium phosphate (antacid)
ATC: A02AD01 (Alimentary tract and metabolism | Antacids | Combinations and complexes of aluminium, calcium and magnesium compounds)
Do not take with milk, calcium, iron, magnesium, or antacids if separation is recommended.
Aluminium phosphate is an antacid used to relieve heartburn, excess stomach acid, acid indigestion and acid-related gastric discomfort. It acts locally in the stomach by partially neutralising gastric acid and helping protect the mucosa. It does not treat the underlying cause of reflux or ulcer disease, but temporarily reduces symptoms.
It is taken by mouth as a gel, suspension or sachet, according to the product leaflet. Depending on the product, it may be taken after meals or when symptoms occur. It should not be used for long periods without medical advice. Aluminium phosphate can reduce the absorption of other medicines, so they should usually be taken separately, often at least 2 hours apart.
Possible side effects include constipation, nausea, unpleasant taste, bloating or abdominal discomfort. Excessive use may cause mineral imbalance, especially in people with kidney impairment. Caution is needed in older patients, people with kidney disease, severe constipation, low-phosphate diets or multiple medicines that may interact with antacids.
Consult a doctor if heartburn persists, returns often, or is accompanied by weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, difficulty swallowing, chest pain or anaemia. These signs may indicate serious disease. Do not use antacids as a permanent solution without diagnosis, especially if symptoms are new after the age of 50.
