Leaflet ACIFOL 5mg film-coated tablets

Indicated for: folate deficiency; prevention of neural tube defects

Route of administration: oral

Substance: folic acid (vitamin)

ATC: B03BB01 (Blood and blood forming organs | Vitamin b12 and folic acid | Folic acid and derivatives)

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is an essential vitamin involved in the formation of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, and cell division. It is particularly important during pregnancy, as it supports the normal development of the fetal neural tube, preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Folic acid is used to prevent and treat folate deficiency, which can lead to megaloblastic anemia. It is also recommended in certain conditions, such as celiac disease, hemolytic anemia, or when taking medications that interfere with folate absorption.

It is well-tolerated by most patients, but excessive intake may mask symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is recommended to use it as directed by a doctor, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
