About this active substance
Spaglumic acid is an anti-allergy medicine used locally in the eyes, mainly for allergic conjunctivitis. It acts as a mast-cell stabiliser, reducing the release of substances involved in itching, redness and watering. It is particularly useful when symptoms are triggered by pollen, dust, animals or other allergens.
It is used as eye drops according to the leaflet or doctor’s advice. Wash hands before use, avoid touching the bottle tip to the eye or skin, and keep an interval between drops if you use several eye products. Contact lenses may need to be removed before administration, depending on the preservative and product.
Side effects may include temporary stinging, burning sensation, eye irritation, transient blurred vision, watering or unpleasant taste. The effect may not be as immediate as with antihistamines; it can work better if treatment is started before exposure to the allergen. Do not use the drops for severe eye pain or suspected infection without medical assessment.
Consult a doctor urgently if eye pain, reduced vision, purulent discharge, marked light sensitivity, eyelid swelling or persistent redness occurs.
