About this active substance

Oxytetracycline + dexamethasone is an eye medicine for certain bacterial infections of the eye or eyelids with inflammation, and for selected situations after eye surgery. Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic; dexamethasone reduces inflammation. This is not a universal treatment for a red eye and requires medical assessment.

Apply the ophthalmic ointment as prescribed, usually for a short course. Wash your hands and avoid touching the eye with the container tip. Do not swallow the product or reuse single-dose containers. Avoid contact lenses during treatment and do not drive until any temporary blurred vision after application has cleared.

Stinging, irritation and allergy may occur. The corticosteroid can raise eye pressure, delay healing and conceal a worsening infection. Prolonged use requires ophthalmic monitoring and can promote cataract formation. Do not use the combination for ocular herpes or fungal infections, which the antibiotic does not treat.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, reduced vision or worsening symptoms. Tell the clinician about glaucoma, recent eye procedures and retinoid treatment. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require specific assessment; some preparations are contraindicated in the second and third trimesters. Do not extend the course yourself.
