Montelukast is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of asthma, as well as for relieving symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking leukotriene receptors, which are chemicals involved in inflammation, thereby reducing airway inflammation and constriction.

It is effective in preventing asthma attacks, especially those triggered by exercise or allergens, but it is not suitable for treating acute asthma attacks. Additionally, it helps reduce symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching associated with allergies.

Montelukast is generally well-tolerated but may cause side effects such as headaches, abdominal pain, or, more rarely, mood changes like anxiety or insomnia. Patients should follow the prescribed treatment and avoid stopping the medication without consulting their doctor.

This medication is typically used as an adjunct therapy in combination with other treatments for asthma or allergies.
