Lamotrigine is an antiepileptic medication used for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It works by stabilizing the brain's electrical activity and reducing the release of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter.

The medication is taken orally, usually twice daily, and the dose is gradually adjusted to reduce the risk of side effects. It is important to follow the doctor's instructions and not to discontinue treatment abruptly.

Side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or skin rashes. In rare cases, severe reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur.

Lamotrigine is not recommended for patients with hypersensitivity to this medication. Careful monitoring is required during treatment, especially at the beginning.
