About this active substance

Ivy leaf extract is a herbal medicine used as an expectorant for productive cough, especially during colds or mild bronchitis. It helps loosen secretions and may make it easier to clear mucus from the airways. It is not intended for severe cough with shortness of breath or important lung infection without medical assessment.

It is taken by mouth as syrup, drops, tablets or capsules, depending on the product and the patient’s age. The dose differs between extracts, so the leaflet should be followed. Several ivy products should not be used at the same time. Adequate fluids and humidified air may support clearance of secretions.

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or allergic reactions with rash, itching and swelling. Some syrups may contain sugar, sorbitol, alcohol or other excipients relevant to people with diabetes, children or those with intolerances. Caution is advised in patients with gastritis or stomach ulcer.

Consult a doctor if cough lasts more than one week, worsens, or if fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, purulent sputum or blood in sputum occurs. In infants and young children, only a product authorised for their age should be used. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use should be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
