About this active substance
Inavolisib is an anticancer medicine used in adults with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer that is hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative, and has a PIK3CA mutation. It is given with palbociclib and fulvestrant, usually when the cancer has returned or progressed after endocrine treatment.
The medicine blocks part of the PI3K pathway, which some cancer cells use to grow and survive. For a patient, the key point is that the PIK3CA mutation should be confirmed by an appropriate test, because this treatment is intended for tumours with that specific genetic change.
Inavolisib is taken by mouth exactly as prescribed, together with the other medicines in the regimen. Do not change the dose or stop treatment unless your oncology team tells you to. Your doctor will monitor blood tests, blood sugar, blood counts and your general condition, especially during the first weeks.
Important side effects include high blood sugar, mouth sores or inflammation, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, skin rash and low blood cell counts. Contact your healthcare team promptly if you develop intense thirst, frequent urination, breathing difficulty, fever, severe diarrhoea, or if mouth pain prevents you from eating or drinking.
