About this active substance
Guaifenesin + pseudoephedrine is a combination used for colds or respiratory infections with productive cough and nasal congestion. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps thin mucus, while pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that reduces swelling of the nasal lining. The treatment relieves symptoms, but it does not cure the underlying viral infection.
It is taken by mouth according to the dose in the leaflet. Drinking enough fluids may help loosen secretions. Do not combine it with other cold products without checking ingredients, because duplicated active substances can cause overdose. Pseudoephedrine can stimulate the nervous system, so evening use may cause insomnia in some people.
Side effects may include nausea, stomach discomfort, dizziness, nervousness, insomnia, palpitations, increased blood pressure, dry mouth or difficulty urinating. Caution is advised in patients with high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, diabetes, enlarged prostate or treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants.
Seek medical advice if chest pain, severe palpitations, very high blood pressure, confusion, breathing difficulty, allergic rash, persistent fever or coughing blood occurs. Do not use it for chronic cough related to smoking, asthma or COPD without medical advice. In children, pregnancy and breastfeeding, only a permitted and recommended product should be used.
