Flumazenil is a medication used to rapidly reverse the sedative effects of benzodiazepines, being used in cases of overdose or to awaken patients after certain medical procedures. It works by blocking the receptors in the brain to which benzodiazepines bind, quickly restoring consciousness.

Flumazenil is administered intravenously under strict medical supervision, usually in a hospital or intensive care unit. The effect appears quickly, within minutes, but may be short-lived, requiring continuous monitoring.

Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, anxiety, seizures, or allergic reactions. Administration to patients dependent on benzodiazepines can trigger severe withdrawal symptoms, so its use is carefully evaluated by the doctor.

Flumazenil is an effective antidote for benzodiazepine overdose, but should only be used in controlled environments under medical supervision to prevent complications.
