About this active substance
Eucalyptus, sweet orange, myrtle and lemon oils in a standardised distillate are used to loosen mucus in acute or chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. They may make secretions easier to clear but do not replace an antibiotic when one is indicated. This description concerns oral medicines, not homemade essential-oil mixtures.
Swallow gastro-resistant capsules whole with plenty of cold water, usually about half an hour before meals, following the leaflet. The dose and minimum age depend on the product. Do not open capsules to use their contents for steam inhalation in children, and do not swallow essential oils that are not medicinal oral preparations.
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, altered taste or allergic reactions can occur. Very rarely, existing kidney or gallstones may move and cause pain. Do not use the medicine with inflammatory digestive or biliary diseases or severe liver disease. Asthma or very sensitive airways requires medical advice.
Stop treatment and seek emergency help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Fever, pus-like or bloody sputum, breathlessness and worsening symptoms need assessment. See a doctor if you are not better within ten days. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, treatment should follow an individual assessment of benefits and risks.
