About this active substance
Distilled water is purified by evaporation and condensation and contains few dissolved salts. The name describes how it is produced, not a therapeutic indication. It does not automatically mean that the product is sterile or suitable for injection. Technical distilled water and pharmaceutical water for injections are not interchangeable.
Use depends on the purpose stated on the container, such as pharmaceutical preparation, laboratory work or particular devices. Follow the product and device instructions; there is no general therapeutic dose. Technical products must not be assumed to be drinking water or used to prepare medicines without confirmation that they meet the required quality.
Risks mainly arise from incorrect use. Ordinary distilled water may be contaminated and is unsuitable for injections, eye drops or sterile preparations. Water given intravenously on its own can destroy red blood cells. It does not itself disinfect and does not supply the minerals in a rehydration solution.
Do not dilute medicines or fill a nebuliser with this product unless the instructions explicitly allow that use. Incorrect storage after opening encourages contamination. Do not use damaged containers or water containing particles or a changed appearance. Accidental injection or administration by an unauthorised route requires immediate medical assessment.
