Cefiderocol is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and uses bacterial iron uptake mechanisms to enter cells.
It is indicated for complicated urinary tract infections, nosocomial pneumonia, and other infections caused by resistant bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Acinetobacter baumannii. It is administered intravenously, usually every 8 hours, under medical supervision.
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, headache, and injection site reactions. Rarely, severe allergic reactions or kidney dysfunction may occur, requiring careful monitoring.
Cefiderocol is reserved for severe cases where other antibiotics are ineffective, and treatment must be administered as directed by a specialist.
