About this active substance

Bezlotoxumab is a monoclonal antibody used to prevent the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection, a bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and colitis. It works by neutralizing toxin B produced by C. difficile, thereby reducing the risk of infection recurrence.

The medication is administered as an intravenous infusion, usually in combination with standard antibiotic treatment for active infection. Bezlotoxumab does not treat the infection itself but helps prevent its recurrence. It is particularly indicated for patients at high risk of recurrence, such as the elderly or those with chronic conditions.

Common side effects include nausea, fever, headache, and infusion site reactions. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur, which is why administration should be done under medical supervision.

Bezlotoxumab is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Patients should inform their doctor of their full medical history before administration to ensure treatment safety.
