About this active substance

Artichoke extract, usually obtained from the leaves, is used to relieve mild digestive complaints such as fullness after meals, bloating and flatulence. Its use rests mainly on tradition, with limited clinical evidence. It does not replace treatment for liver disease and should not be expected to remove gallstones.

It is taken by mouth as tablets, capsules or liquid, following the product leaflet. The dose depends on the extract and its concentration, so different products are not automatically interchangeable. Do not exceed the recommended amount or combine several bile-related herbal products without advice. Symptoms lasting beyond two weeks need medical assessment.

Possible adverse effects include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, heartburn and allergic reactions. Do not use it if you are allergic to artichoke or related plants in the Asteraceae family. Stop taking it if a rash appears; facial swelling or breathing difficulty requires urgent medical help.

Do not use artichoke extract with bile duct obstruction. Gallstones, liver disease or other biliary conditions require assessment before treatment. Severe pain under the right ribs, fever or yellowing of the skin should not be managed with self-medication. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, seek advice about the specific product because safety information is limited.
