Zolmitriptan is a medication used for the treatment of acute migraines, with or without aura. It belongs to the class of triptans and works by stimulating serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptors in the blood vessels of the brain, causing their constriction and reducing neurogenic inflammation associated with migraines. This mechanism helps relieve pain and other migraine symptoms, such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound.

Zolmitriptan is available in the form of tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and nasal spray, providing options for patients who have difficulty swallowing medications during a migraine attack. It is most effective when taken at the onset of a migraine but can also be used later during the attack.

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, tingling sensations, nausea, and a feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest or throat. In rare cases, it may cause more serious reactions, such as severe hypertension or cardiac ischemia, and is therefore contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular diseases or uncontrolled hypertension.

Zolmitriptan should be used as directed by a doctor, and the maximum daily dose should not be exceeded.
