Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat moderate bacterial infections. It is indicated for upper respiratory tract infections (such as sinusitis, tonsillitis, or pharyngitis), lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, as well as some bone and joint infections.

Cefuroxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, killing the bacteria responsible for the infection. It is available in tablet, oral suspension, or injectable solution form.

Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin rashes, or allergic reactions. In rare cases, it can cause pseudomembranous colitis or severe hypersensitivity reactions. It is contraindicated in patients with allergies to cephalosporins or penicillins.
