Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for energy metabolism and the normal functioning of the nervous system. It is involved in the processes of converting carbohydrates into energy and in the activity of enzymes required for glucose metabolism.

Thiamine is used to treat and prevent thiamine deficiency, which can occur in cases of malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, beriberi (a disease caused by severe thiamine deficiency), or conditions requiring increased vitamin B1 intake, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding.

It is available in the form of tablets, capsules, or injectable solutions. Side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, such as skin rashes or itching, especially with injectable administration. Thiamine is considered safe and well-tolerated, as excess amounts are excreted in the urine.
