Retinol + ergocalciferol is a combination of vitamin A and vitamin D2 used to prevent or treat certain deficiencies when dietary intake or sun exposure is insufficient, or when supplementation is recommended by a healthcare professional. Vitamin A supports vision, immunity and mucous membranes, while vitamin D helps calcium absorption and bone health.
It is taken by mouth, usually with food, because both vitamins are fat-soluble. The dose must be followed exactly, and patients should check whether they also take multivitamins, vitamin D drops, cod liver oil or retinoid medicines. Correct supplementation depends on age, diet, blood tests, pregnancy, associated illnesses and the risk of deficiency.
Side effects are uncommon at appropriate doses, but excess can be dangerous. Too much vitamin A may cause headache, nausea, dry skin, hair loss, bone pain, liver injury and fetal malformations. Too much vitamin D can raise blood calcium, causing thirst, frequent urination, constipation, weakness, confusion and kidney injury.
Ask for medical advice before use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, kidney disease, kidney stones, high calcium, sarcoidosis or treatment with retinoids, diuretics or digoxin. Keep the product away from children. If persistent vomiting, sleepiness, intense headache, jaundice or signs of high calcium occur, stop taking it and contact a doctor.
