Indicated for: pain and inflammation
Substance: mefenamic acid (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
ATC: M01AG01 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antiinflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids | Fenamates)
Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat acute pain of mild to moderate intensity, including menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) and muscle or joint pain. It can also be used to reduce inflammation associated with various conditions.
Mefenamic acid works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, substances involved in the inflammatory process and pain perception. It is effective in relieving pain and reducing inflammation, but its use is recommended for short-term treatment, typically no longer than 7 days.
Side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances (such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, or diarrhea), dizziness, or allergic reactions. It is important to take the medication as directed by a doctor, and patients with gastric, kidney, or liver conditions should exercise caution.
