Remdesivir is an antiviral medication used for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes COVID-19. It is a nucleotide analog that inhibits viral RNA polymerase, blocking the replication of the virus in infected cells. Remdesivir has been approved for use in moderate to severe cases of COVID-19, particularly in hospitalized patients requiring supplemental oxygen.
The medication is administered intravenously, usually once daily, for a duration of 5 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the disease. It is most effective when given in the early stages of infection, before the disease progresses to critical forms.
Common side effects include nausea, headache, elevated liver enzymes (transaminases), and injection site reactions. Rarely, severe allergic reactions or kidney dysfunction may occur. Regular monitoring of liver and kidney function is essential during treatment.
Remdesivir is used under strict medical supervision and is reserved for hospitals and medical facilities. While it can reduce hospitalization duration and disease progression, its effectiveness varies depending on the stage of the disease and the patient’s overall condition.
