Salicylic acid is a topical medicine used on the skin as a keratolytic agent, meaning it helps soften and remove thickened skin. Depending on strength and form, it may be used for warts, corns, calluses, acne, dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis or scaly areas. Not all products are intended for the same conditions.

It should be applied only to the indicated area, according to the leaflet. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, surrounding healthy skin, open wounds or irritated areas. Wart and corn products may contain higher concentrations than acne products and should not be applied to the face, genitals, moles, birthmarks or hairy warts without medical advice.

Side effects may include stinging, burning, redness, dryness, peeling, irritation or contact dermatitis. Application over large areas, under occlusive dressings or on damaged skin can increase absorption and the risk of general reactions, especially in children. People with diabetes, poor circulation or kidney disease should seek medical advice.

Stop use and consult a doctor if intense pain, blisters, bleeding, widespread rash, dizziness, ringing in the ears, severe nausea or worsening of the lesion occurs. Do not combine several exfoliating or irritating products without advice. If a wart, corn or acne does not improve or looks unusual, dermatological assessment is needed.
