Leaflet TRENTAL 400mg prolonged-release sugar-coated tablets

Indicated for: peripheral vascular disease; circulatory disorders

Route of administration: oral

Substance: pentoxifylline (vasodilator)

ATC: C04AD03 (Cardiovascular system | Peripheral vasodilators | Purine derivatives)

Pentoxifylline is a medication used to improve blood circulation, particularly in conditions involving reduced blood flow, such as peripheral arterial disease. It is prescribed to alleviate symptoms like leg pain during walking (intermittent claudication) and to enhance exercise tolerance.

It works by increasing the flexibility of red blood cells and reducing blood viscosity, which helps blood flow more easily through narrowed vessels. Additionally, it may have beneficial effects in reducing inflammation and improving tissue oxygenation.

Pentoxifylline is also used in other conditions, such as chronic venous ulcers, cerebrovascular disease, or certain microcirculatory disorders. It is generally well-tolerated, but side effects such as nausea, dizziness, headaches, or, rarely, allergic reactions may occur.

Patients should strictly follow their doctor’s instructions and report any side effects or other medications they are taking to ensure safe and effective treatment.
