Hawthorn is a herbal medicine traditionally used for mild palpitations related to nervousness, emotions or stress, after a doctor has excluded serious heart disease. Preparations may contain hawthorn leaf, flower or fruit and are available as teas, tinctures, tablets or extracts. Patients should understand that hawthorn does not replace prescribed treatment for confirmed heart conditions.
Use depends on the product form and should follow the package leaflet or pharmacist’s advice. Any benefit is usually gradual rather than immediate. If palpitations are new, frequent, triggered by effort or accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness or fainting, medical assessment is needed before using a herbal product.
Side effects are usually uncommon and mild, but may include nausea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, sleepiness or allergic skin reactions. Hawthorn may influence the effects of some cardiovascular medicines or treatments that affect blood pressure and heart rhythm. People with heart disease or long-term medication should not use it without medical advice.
Seek medical help if chest pain, breathing difficulty, leg swelling, persistent palpitations, fainting or rapid worsening occurs. Avoid self-medication during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children. Before surgery, tell the doctor if you use hawthorn, because some extracts may raise caution about bleeding risk or interactions with other medicines.
