Yarrow is a medicinal plant traditionally used for temporary loss of appetite, bloating, flatulence and mild cramp-like digestive complaints. It may also be found in products for minor menstrual cramps or for local care of superficial skin irritation. Its use is mainly based on long-standing traditional experience rather than large modern clinical trials.
Preparations may include herbal teas, extracts or topical forms, and the correct use depends on the product. For internal use, follow the leaflet or the pharmacist’s advice regarding dose and duration. If digestive symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by severe pain, fever, repeated vomiting, blood in the stool or unexplained weight loss, medical assessment is needed.
Possible side effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, skin irritation, itching or allergic reactions. People allergic to plants from the Asteraceae family, such as chamomile, arnica, marigold or ragweed, may have a higher risk of allergy. Topical preparations should be used cautiously and avoided on deep, infected or extensive wounds unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.
Do not use yarrow as a substitute for treatment prescribed by a doctor. Seek medical advice before use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, in young children, liver disease, multiple allergies or chronic medication. Stop using it and get urgent help if facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rash, severe dizziness or rapid worsening of symptoms occurs.
