Benfotiamine is a synthetic derivative of thiamine (vitamin B1) primarily used for the prevention and treatment of thiamine deficiency and complications associated with diabetes, such as diabetic neuropathy. Unlike regular thiamine, benfotiamine is fat-soluble, allowing for better absorption and increased bioavailability.

Benfotiamine helps protect nerves by reducing oxidative stress and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are involved in tissue damage in diabetes. It is used to alleviate symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness associated with peripheral neuropathy.

The medication is taken orally, usually in the form of capsules or tablets, at doses recommended by a doctor, depending on the condition being treated.

Side effects are rare but may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal discomfort) or allergic reactions. It is well-tolerated by most patients.

Benfotiamine is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, its use should be done with caution and only under medical advice.
