Dandelion, botanically known as Taraxacum officinale, is a herbal medicine traditionally used to support digestion, stimulate appetite and increase urinary elimination in minor complaints. Depending on the product, the root, leaf or whole plant may be used. Its effects are generally mild and do not replace treatment for significant digestive, gallbladder or kidney disease.
It is taken by mouth as tea, capsules, tablets, tincture or extract, according to the leaflet. For mild digestive complaints it is usually used short term, while for a diuretic effect adequate fluid intake is important. Doses vary considerably between products, so combining several dandelion preparations without pharmacist advice is not recommended.
Side effects may include heartburn, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea or allergic reactions. People allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as chamomile, ragweed or marigold, may be at higher risk. Caution is advised in patients with gallstones, bile duct obstruction, stomach ulcer, kidney disease, diuretic treatment or lithium therapy.
Consult a doctor if severe abdominal pain, jaundice, fever, persistent vomiting, blood in the urine, back pain or symptoms that do not improve occur. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, use should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Dandelion may help minor symptoms, but proper diagnosis matters when digestive or urinary problems persist.
