Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic for selected infections caused by susceptible bacteria. In tuberculosis it may be included in selected regimens, always alongside other tuberculosis medicines. It blocks bacterial protein production. It does not treat viral infections; selection depends on the infection, bacterial susceptibility and available alternatives.
It is usually given by intramuscular injection by healthcare staff. Dose and dosing intervals depend on weight, age and kidney function. Kidney, hearing and balance checks are required; blood antibiotic levels are sometimes measured. Follow the prescribed schedule and do not change doses or duration yourself.
Injection pain, nausea, rash or allergic reactions can occur. Major risks include kidney injury and inner-ear damage, causing balance problems or hearing loss that may be irreversible. Rarely, severe muscle weakness and impaired breathing occur. Some antibiotics and diuretics increase these risks.
Report ringing in the ears, reduced hearing, dizziness with imbalance, reduced urination or marked weakness immediately; breathing difficulty needs emergency help. Tell the doctor about kidney or hearing problems, planned anaesthesia and all treatments. During pregnancy it can damage the unborn child's hearing and is used only when a specialist considers it essential.
