Spironolactone is a diuretic medication that belongs to the class of aldosterone antagonists. It is used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, edema associated with liver or kidney diseases, and primary hyperaldosteronism (a condition characterized by excessive aldosterone production). It is also used in some cases to treat acne, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Spironolactone works by blocking the effects of aldosterone, a hormone that causes sodium and water retention in the body. Through this mechanism, it helps eliminate excess fluid and lower blood pressure while maintaining potassium levels.

It is taken orally, usually once or twice daily, with the dosage adjusted based on the condition being treated and the patient's response.
