This medicine may change blood electrolyte levels.
Sodium chloride + potassium chloride + calcium chloride is an electrolyte solution given by infusion or used in medical settings to restore or maintain water and salt balance. Sodium, potassium and calcium are essential electrolytes for nerves, muscles, the heart and body fluid volume.
Intravenous administration is performed only by healthcare professionals, with monitoring of the patient’s condition and sometimes blood tests. The infusion rate and amount depend on age, weight, dehydration, fluid losses, kidney function and other illnesses. Calcium-containing solutions must not be mixed randomly with other medicines because incompatibilities may occur.
Side effects may include pain or irritation at the infusion site, fever, local infection, vein inflammation, swelling, fluid overload or electrolyte imbalance. Too much potassium can cause heart rhythm disturbances, while too much calcium may cause nausea, weakness, confusion or constipation. The risk is higher in kidney disease.
Tell healthcare staff immediately if breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or legs, chest pain, palpitations, severe dizziness, infusion-site pain or leakage into tissues occurs. Inform the doctor if you have heart failure, kidney disease, digoxin treatment, diuretics or electrolyte disorders. The solution should not be administered at home without supervision.
