Goldenrod herb + orthosiphon leaf + restharrow root is a herbal combination traditionally used to support urinary elimination in minor urinary complaints. By increasing urine flow, it may help flush the urinary tract. It is not an antibiotic and should not be used as the only treatment for severe or clearly bacterial urinary tract infections.
It is usually taken by mouth as tea, capsules or liquid preparations, according to the leaflet. Adequate fluid intake is important unless a doctor has recommended fluid restriction. Use is suitable only for mild, short-term symptoms, such as minor urinary discomfort or frequent urination without warning signs. Persistent symptoms need medical assessment.
Side effects may include stomach discomfort, nausea, mild diarrhoea, allergic reactions or skin rash. Caution is advised in people with plant allergies, kidney disease, heart disease, oedema, diuretic treatment, antihypertensive treatment or risk of dehydration. It should not be used to force water loss from the body without medical advice, especially in frail patients.
Seek medical help promptly if fever, chills, back pain, blood in the urine, severe nausea, intense pain when urinating, urinary retention or symptoms lasting more than a few days occur. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, it should be used only with medical advice. Correct treatment depends on the cause, and urinary infections may require antibiotics.
